Bringing Character to a New Build Downstairs W.C.
The downstairs cloakroom is often an overlooked space, relegated to a functional necessity rather than a design opportunity. However, with a touch of creativity and a willingness to step outside the conventional, you can transform this utilitarian space into a stunning focal point. In this blog post, we'll explore how we did exactly that.
The Brief:
To create a welcoming downstairs w.c that works with the moody, cosy vibes found in the rest of the home. The house is a new-build and the aim is to bring personality and character to each space, reflecting the family of four living here. This downstairs loo is surprisingly quite big and the motion-sensor spotlights and the window opposite bring an abundance of light to the space. The wall tiles are a dark taupe and the floor tiles are light cream. As this is a new-build we did not want to start ripping out tiles and lighting fixtures etc. Not only would this be environmentally unfriendly, but it would also take us way above the £300 budget. So we have worked the wall and floor tiles into the design.
The Design Rationale:
Colour scheme:
Throughout the home a pink and green palette is repeated, so we have used this same colour scheme in this space. We chose a vibrant House of Hackney moody green paint colour for the walls and a gorgeous bold House of Hackney floral pink wallpaper - both work well with the taupe tiles.
Lighting:
As we have already mentioned, the spotlights have to stay. The mirror in the bathroom takes up the whole length of the wall above the sink, so there is no space for a wall sconce. To add a bit of ambience, we have included a large three wick candle.
Layering of Textures & Patterns:
To add depth and interest to the space we have included a range of textures and patterns such as the Hay chequered hand towel, the antic wooden stool and planting.
Focal point - wow factor!
The wallpaper is the focal point in this small space. It is a beautiful bold floral print and will definitely spark a lot of conversation!
